Teacher fired for not making kids wear IDs

ELKINS -- An Elkins High School physics teacher who saw "the mark of the
beast'' in his school ID badge has been fired for not requiring his students
to wear their badges.

The Randolph County Board of Education voted 4-1 Thursday night to dismiss
Philip Hudok for insubordination. The vote came in a packed meeting room,
filled with Hudok's supporters and with county employees who wore their ID
badges.

Earlier this month, the school board allowed Hudok to wear a badge without a
bar code after he complained that a bar code violates his religious beliefs.

Hudok likens the bar code to "the mark of the beast,'' described in Chapter
13 of the Bible's book of Revelation, which warns that numbering people
signals the arrival of the Antichrist.

Hudok agreed to the compromise but refused to require his students to wear
the bar codes, which school officials had developed as part of a safety
plan.

Superintendent Glen Karlen said the board adequately compromised on Hudok's
behalf, but the teacher "changed his beliefs midstream.''

Karlen had said that students who share Hudok's concerns with the
identification system may raise their complaints individually.
