I called the Sheriff's Office and gave them the particulars. The confirmed
the plate as being on a 1971 Ford Mustang, which matches what I saw.

The gave me a tracking number and will investigate further.

As for "pressing charges," there was no trespass by the ways our laws about
driveways and front steps and doorbells work. Had I had a gate closed, then
crossing over the fence or gate would've been trespass.

A slight crypto relevance here is that this is where zero knowledge
authentication tokens would be useful. I have a gate on my driveway, but I
don't keep it closed and locked because various unpredictable persons need
occasional access: the UPS and FedEx trucks, the meter readers, etc. A
ZKIPS system where I keep a list at the gate of who can pass would be
useful. (ZKIPS in that one doesn't want either a universal access code on
my side or a universal access code on their side.)
