Magellan to Demo New Breed of Satellite Navigation and Communication Devices At
David Coursey's Showcase 99
SAN DIEGO, Calif., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Magellan Corporation will demo at
David Coursey's Showcase '99 four satellite-based products -- three hand-helds
and one in-car system -- that represent a new step in the evolution of
consumer-oriented satellite communication, navigation and guidance devices.
The GPS 315 and MAP 410 will be the first hand-held OPS receivers to take
advantage of hundreds of thousands of downloadable points of interest (POIs)
such as museums, wineries, hotels, restaurants, boat docks and campgrounds.
Utilizing the companion DataSend CD on their laptop or PC, travelers will be
able to select a region anywhere in the world, choose POI categories within
that region, and the DataSend software will then cull the individual points of
interest within that region, complete with addresses and phone numbers. These
products use the U.S. goverment Global Positioning System satellites to guide
the user to selected destinations, reporting speed, distance, time-to-go,
steering instructions, etc.
Additionally, Magellan will demo the GSC 100, the world's first handheld
satellite communications device for sending and receiving email from anywhere
in the world. Accessing the ORBCOMM satellite constellation, the portable GSC
100 allows users, for the first time, to communicate from anywhere on Earth via
email messaging from a hand-held transmitter receiver. The GSC 100 also
provides integrated positioning and navigation capabilities using GPS. GSC 100
users will be able to identify their position, plot and navigate a course, and
communicate their position or any other information to anyone on Earth who has
an email address, voice or fax service.
In addition to the three band-held devices, Magellan will demo the 75ONAV, the
first transportable car navigation system that provides turn-by-turn directions
and voice prompts. While existing high-end car navigation systems must be
hard-wired to one's car, the 75ONAV can be transported from one vehicle to
another, allowing for the type of flexibility previously associated with less
accurate hand-held car navigation systems. Like the GPS 315 and MAP 410, the
75ONAV is PC-compatible and will allow the user to download information from a
PC such as the user's daily schedule as well as updates to the system's map
database. The 75ONAV will soon be deployed in 50,000 Hertz cars and also will
be available as a consumer after-market product.
