This analysis ignores the common asymmetry in who's hiding, who's not.
The searching ship or sub may be uninterested in hiding. It may be in its
own waters, it may have a flotilla of friendlies nearby, etc. In the
canonical "c-sub hiding on the bottom" scenario, the c-sub must remain
hidden.
