Thursday at noon, Nat Nappi, Jr. from NAVSEA's Surface Ship Structural Integrity
Division will be giving a seminar talk about ...

U.S. Navy Ship Structural Design Challenges and Opportunities in the
21st Century

Transformation of the Navy's surface fleet is already underway and can be
seen in the introduction of new experimental high speed craft such as the
Joint Venture (HSV-X1), the HSV-2 SWIFT, the X-Craft and is also evident in
technologies being exploited in current ship acquistions for DD(X) and the
Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). With greater emphasis being placed on
transporting troops and equipment quickly, there is growing interest in
adopting high speed commercial vessels and their technology to satisfy these
naval missions. In addition to their non-conventional hull forms, these
non-traditional Navy hull materials and the commercial standards they are
designed to are currently undergoing rigorous evaluation by the Navy's
technical community for use in future designs. This presents opportunities
for advancing the state-of-the-art in risk and relibaility-based methods in
structural design.

Join us to listen to his talk and have some lunch.
