The first public phase of testing ("early test") for Athena Release 8.1
on the Sun and SGI platforms is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, June
10th. (Early test maps roughly into what previous releases called
"staff test" but includes a few machines in general use clusters.) You
are currently listed as the contact for the following workstation(s)
which are configured to take the release:

Please note that any workstation listed here which has AUTOUPDATE=TRUE
set in /etc/athena/rc.conf will automatically take the release update.
If you are not the correct contact or do not wish to take the release,
please contact me (dot@mit.edu) as soon as possible. On behalf of the
release team, I strongly encourage you to take the release and to
participate in the testing process.
As a early tester, we ask that you use your early test machine and
report any bugs or changes in behavior, no matter how minor. You should
be prepared to take the release once it is available.
What's in Release 8.1?
----------------------
Many changes have been made in the 8.1 release; some of the most
notable ones are:
* Solaris 2.5.1
* Kerberos 5 versions of the krlogind and krshd daemons
* Athena version numbers are now composed of three numbers
instead of two digits and a letter.
* The default "xmkmf" command is now the vendor xmkmf.
An unfinished version of the user release notes is available at:
http://web.mit.edu/olh/Release/8.1/
The system release notes are maintained in
/afs/dev.mit.edu/project/relnotes/rel81.tex for those interested
in a more complete list of changes.
A detailed message will be sent to all early testers prior to the actual
release.
Finally, you may send questions about the release to
release-team@mit.edu
Thank you.
