One of the recommended patches we applied to Solaris 2.5.1 upgraded
the bundled BIND products to version 4.9.3. Apart from breaking the
update (which I've fixed), this has two serious impacts on power
users, both of which will be documented in the system release notes:
* /etc/named.local won't work any more. There are comments in
/etc/named.boot explaining the "correct" (and less
convenient) way of putting local records on a machine.
* named will round-robin returned DNS entries. Fortunately,
we now have support in attach for choosing the highest-
preference filsys entry, but there are a couple of minor
effects:
- The hesiod filsys support in tcsh (which has been in
SIPB tcsh for a long time, and is turned on in
/bin/athena/tcsh in 8.1) just picks the first filsys
entry, so things like "~sipb" will evaluate to
unpredictable things.
- Our DNS hack for the dialups won't work as well if
people do "telnet athena.dialup" from an 8.1 Sun.
But I doubt that will cause an operational problem,
since most dialup users go through the pasta pads.
