Nope, this is not the same issue, particularly if it's limited to just McCo=
rmick.

That issue affected all 7010s, and was the result a change in how kernels w=
ere updated, which resulted in machines being stuck with old kernels. I fi=
xed that bug in April, and we verified that all 7010s started working again=
.

The McCormick machines now have the latest kernel.

Hi Jonathan,

I don=92t know if you remember this is the same issue that I had before
you left. It was happening to machine=92s in building 1, and again
it was spread out to different machines on campus. Right now it=92s
just happening to machines in McCormick Hall. I went over and
re-imaged the machines and it worked for about a week and then
the issue started back up again. Sar said he was going to get in touch
with Sean Preston. Thanks

Some things I would check:

- Is this affecting all users of the machine? Have you been able to verify=
it in person with your own account?
- Does it affect people who try and log in with "Athena TTY Session"?
- Is this affecting just machines in McCormick, or all machines _of the sam=
e model_ (e.g. 7010) throughout the clusters? (I assume it is not affectin=
g all Athena workstations entirely, or I would have heard about it already)
- Does the problem persist across a re-install?

Failing that, someone with a good understanding of Linux will need to take =
a look at /var/log/syslog and possibly the ~/.xsession-errors file for a us=
er who ran into issues.

Hi Alex,

We were sent the following RT ticket with the following comments.

Hello,

The computers in the McCormick Athena cluster are giving problems right
now. If you try to sign in, the desktop flashes on the screen then returns
to the login screen. Can you please send someone to fix this issue? I've
informed the residents on how to print from their laptops but it would be
nice for them to be able to use the Athena computers.

I sent this same email last week and did not receive any response.

Regards,
Maryam Archie
McCormick Technology Chair

Please take a look.

Thank You,
