I'm currently looking at Thursday 8/14 at around 1pm for the
athena.dialup.mit.edu upgrade. This will simply be a DNS change to
point athena.dialup.mit.edu (and ftp.dialup, etc., etc.) at the new
machines. Existing connections will not be touched at this time.

Do you see any problems with this? I assume people will be around all
week to deal with any emergencies that crop up after the cluster
upgrades anyway.
