I almost missed the opportunity for this.
As part of Release 7.7 we should go from Andrew release 5.2 to Andrew
Version 6.
Advantages:
contains port to LINUX
contains cleaner port to Solaris 2
contains bug fixes
contains, as standard methods, previous MIT-local hacks
this is the version they support.
User impact:
User visible changes are minor, and part of the already-in-place
process of weaning users from certain MIT-local hacks and going to
the standard way of doing things. Release notes will (as always) be provided.
Scope of Work:
wdc gets the version 6 release, compiles it on our platforms
wdc produces a list of mit-local hacks that should be deleted that have
user impact and gives it to the 7.7 team for review.
there will be a period of burn-in and testing.
Disadvantages:
The amount of work is not zero
the amount of user impact is not zero
I believe that going to version 6 is a good balance of putting in a
little effort to keep us current, continue our progress on removing
mit-tooling, continue our progress on treating EZ as third party
software, and to minimize the effort responding to bug reports.
The effort to implement and transition should be a tiny bit less than
the effort expended to go between 5.1 and 5.2 that we did for Athena
release 7.6.
