experimental.dialup.mit.edu now points to a prototype of the Ubuntu
Precise (12.04) based dialup. Please try it out and report any problems
to bug-dialup. While anyone with an Athena account can log in, please
don't tell users about it at this stage (other IS&T staff or SIPB
members are welcome to use it, but I wasn't planning on explicitly
soliciting wider input until test.dialup.mit.edu is upgraded.
I'm specifically looking for problems that will affect users when
replace the existing dialups. I'm also interested in reports for
problems that will affect users when we move linerva users to the IS&T
dialups, but treat them as a lower priority.
Note: experimental.dialup.mit.edu, is only available from on-campus
(18.0.0.0/8) so use the VPN if you're connecting from elsewhere.
The tentative schedule for pushing this out is:
* upgrade test.dialup in the first half of November
* upgrade athena.dialup in early IAP leaving at least one lucid
machine up as deprecated.dialup
* decommission deprecated.dialup on or around add date (though
that's particularly subject to change if professors have problems).
* I don't yet have thoughts on when we start pushing linerva
users over, but (other than testing) it definitely won't be
until after the production cutover.
