Subject: Support changes for Ubuntu 8.04 and 9.10

Hello,

On May 12, 2011, Ubuntu will end "Desktop" support for 8.04 (Hardy Heron). At that time, Debathena will also end support for the "desktop" environment on Ubuntu 8.04. This means that no new updates or security fixes will be pushed out for any Debathena packages included as part of debathena-login-graphical or debathena-workstation. (debathena-cluster was never supported on Hardy, and any users running debathena-cluster on Hardy should upgrade immediately to Ubuntu 10.04 - Lucid). Since Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) has been available for over a year at this point, all Hardy users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to Lucid. However, we anticipate continuing to provide security fixes only for software in the debathena-login and debathena-standard metapackages through 2013, though we reserve the right to amend that date based on user demand and available development resources.

On April 28, 2011, Ubuntu will end all support for 9.10 (Karmic Koala). At that time, Debathena will also end all support for 9.10. Any remaining Karmic users are encouraged to upgrade to Lucid (10.04) immediately.

Finally, this e-mail should serve as a reminder that Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) was de-supported at the end of October 2010, and has not received security updates or bugfixes for nearly 6 months. Existing Jaunty users should upgrade to Lucid (10.04) immediately. However, anyone using Athena for coursework or other mission-critical applications is strongly encouraged to test all software on the IS&T Athena cluster workstations prior to upgrading.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Reed
