Hi,

I figured that at a minimum we should contact cluster-managers, and
maybe people who did beta testing (friendly test? whatever it was
called) for this release.

I don't think this is going to be earth-shattering news to
anyone. However, I think that there might be consequences that we
haven't thought of, and getting the word out early will allow us to
properly address any issues that come up, instead of just having to
make a snap decision later. If there are no consequences and no one
cares, that's fine :-)

How does the following note look? Is it factually correct?

================
Subject: Advance notice of change in next release

In the next athena release, scheduled for summer 1997, we plan to
remove the symlink from /bin/csh to /bin/athena/tcsh. At that time,
/bin/csh will actually run csh.

There are 2 places where you may notice this change. The first is in
the file /etc/passwd.local on private workstations. Older entries in
this file may include /bin/csh as the shell, but the user may actually
be expecting tcsh. These entries can be changed now to say
/bin/athena/tcsh. There may also be an option when updating to the
next release to automatically change users' /bin/csh entries in passwd
files to /bin/athena/tcsh.

The other place you may notice the change is in scripts. If you have
written any scripts using /bin/csh but actually rely on tcsh features,
you should change the script to use /bin/athena/tcsh. However, most
scripts do not use tcsh features and can be left with /bin/csh.

More information about what will be in the release and when it will go
out will be available as we get closer to next summer.
