I plan on sending the following e-mails to Jaunty users and 9.4 users,
respectively. Please send me any feedback by Friday morning.

Note that we will not be meeting this week, as the first Friday of the
month conflicts with a DITR meeting. We will meet on Dec 10; an invite
and agenda will be sent separately.

Subject: Update required for Debathena on $HOSTNAME

Hello,

You are receiving this e-mail because you are listed as the Moira contact
(or the FSILG network contact, if we were unable to track down an owner
for the machine) for $HOSTNAME. This machine is currently running
$METAPACKAGE on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty). Ubuntu 9.04 was desupported by
Ubuntu at the end of October. This means that your workstation will no
longer receive security updates or bugfixes, so we recommend you upgrade
your workstation to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) as soon as possible.

Please note that IS&T will no longer be sending reminder e-mails to users
running old versions of Debathena. To ensure you continue to receive
important information about Debathena, please add yourself to the
release-announce mailing list. This list is very low-traffic, with only
4-5 e-mails per year. You may subscribe to the list at:
https://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/release-announce

If you choose to upgrade your workstation, please note that the upgrade is
a two-step process: you will need to first upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10
(Karmic), and from there to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid). Alternatively, you may
choose to backup any local data, and re-install your workstation.

Instructions on upgrading your workstation can be found at:
http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/TgVa

As with any software installation or upgrade, we recommend that you have a
recent backup of your locally-stored data before beginning the upgrade
process. We also recommend you fully test any important software before
upgrading, or consider installing a new, separate Lucid workstation.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send e-mail to
debathena@mit.edu.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Reed

Subject: Your Linux-Athena Workstation: $HOSTNAME

Greeetings,

You are receiving this e-mail because you ($RECIPIENT) are currently
listed as a contact for the Athena workstation $HOSTNAME ($IP). This
workstation is currently running Athena $VERSION.

Support for Athena 9.4 ended on October 8, 2010, and Athena 9.4 has not
received security updates or bug fixes since August 2009. While you can
continue to run Athena 9.4 on an "as-is" basis, we encourage you to
upgrade to Debathena. Debathena is the latest evolution of the Athena
computing environment, and provides many new features and new levels of
compatibility and flexibility.

IS&T will not send any further e-mails to Athena 9.4 users, so if you wish
to continue running Athena 9.4 in its unsupported state, no action is
required on your part.

For more information on the end of support for Athena 9, as well as
instructions on upgrading to Debathena, please see:
http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/oAVt

Note: We have transitioned away from the old annual fee based model
for private Athena workstations. Private Athena workstations are now
very similar to running a Windows or Mac computer in your department.
You can purchase a standard Dell desktop and install Debathena on it
using our instructions, and run it at no annual fee. We no longer
offer on-site installation help for departmental machines, but the
instructions are easy to follow and Athena Consulting will be able to
help you remotely if you are installing the Debathena cluster software
on a recommended Dell desktop.

Cordially,
Jonathan Reed
