1. Ubuntu is generally good about hardware compatibility -- if there isn't 
anything on the Internet about Ubuntu not working in the first place, 
nothing we do should really affect that. A cursory Google of [optiplex 980 
ubuntu] finds that Dell in some circumstances even distributes those 
machines with Ubuntu, and some sporadic reports of sound not working.

A Debathena live CD or even a stock Ubuntu live CD would probably be the 
fastest way of testing hardware compatibility, such as whether he has the 
sound cards that are affected by this bug, given access to one of these 
machines. (Of course, we should generate Lucid Debathena live CDs at some 
point...)

2. Regarding -cluster vs. -workstation, there should be no reason not to 
use -cluster if you don't need to install any software for hardware 
compatibility. For instance, we've had SIPB's scanner briefly hooked up to 
a -cluster testing machine, and it worked fine because Ubuntu comes with 
scanning software and the drivers for a USB scanner are built in. However, 
there might be other reasons to prefer -workstation.
