Greetings,
To keep everyone abreast of the The Plan [tm] for replacing the Solaris
Athena 9 dialups with Debathena-driven virtual Linux dialups, here are
some dates now:
01/08 - The test.dialup machine will be unavailable for a short period
on Friday to convert to Linux. On that date, I'll update the various
MOTDs on the remain Sun boxes, which will still be the ones answering to
athena.dialup on Friday, to encourage people to try the new linux.dialup
pool. At that point, I'll drain two more of the Sun dialups as well and
convert them into the linux.dialup pool early the following week, thus
finalizing the configuration of the linux.dialup pool for the
foreseeable future.
01/27 - I'll update the pointer for athena.dialup to point to the
linux.dialup pool. We'll still have a few Suns still on that will
remain on until the end of the semester left as sun.dialup. The
sun.dialup.mit.edu pool is available now for people to use to
differentiate between the Suns and the Linux dialup servers.
End of the spring semester - Evaluate the use of the Suns and
decommission if there is no real compelling reason to leave them on. By
then, it's possible that we'd have culled the herd of remaining Suns
down, based on usage, to fewer boxes to save on the costs in maintaining
them.
If there are any real objections to this plan, please speak up. Also,
please continue to file bug reports to bug-dialup@mit.edu rather to me
directly or to these lists I'm writing to now.
Thanks,
-MM, IS&T Server Operations
