Mostly a round table meeting, with some status updates:
Karmic:
- installer changes and upgrade path to be completed (amb)
- gdm done, modulo aesthetics
- Figure out the right thing for syslog (broder/geofft; ~1 day)
Empathy:
- We still pull in pidgin
- Empathy doesn't do GSSAPI. It's probably not worth nuking Empathy,
even if it doesn't quite work
Printing:
- add-athena-printer exists, there is an issue with banner pages,
we're looking into it, or we can decide local queues don't get banner
pages
-- we still need to support banner page suppression
- collating is broken on GTK apps
- transition from CUPS to cluster-print.mit.edu, currently scheduled
for "after 12/18", which is when mmanley will begin transitioning the
dorm printers.
-- Outreach to RCC required (jdreed)
- We should document using cups to print to clusters printers from Mac/
Windows platforms.
-- Broder has drafted Mac instructions, http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/jABa
(currently ACL'd to IS&T-only, pending review
Tecplot Python stupidity:
- Tecplot is doing something wrong/clever
- Set PYTHONPATH correctly and move on
-- broder will send alexp a shell snippet that will work on all
platforms so we're not doing it by hand each time
Printing 2: The Quickening
- A Pharos device will show up in W20-1xx near the quickstations.
-- It will support minimal hold and release functionality, but no card
swiping required. (Users simply have to prove they actually want their
job)
- ceres is still sad. It is going away, and w20color is moving to
ceres' location
Weird workstation slowness, even with reactivate-2:
- Known affected machines: quick-w20-copy-2, quickstation-11-2
- We don't know what it is or why it's happening on certain machines
Printing 3: Endgame
- A Xerox Device of Awesomeness will be arriving in N42 on Thurs
12/17. Xerox techs will be there, and they want to configure a
Debathena (-workstation) machine to print to it. jdreed and amb? will
be present
Scripts apache modules:
- There are apache modules used by Scripts
- They make configuring MIT cert authentication easier
- Should we build them and put them in Debathena?
-- No, they should go in a SIPB repo
Reactivate 2.5:
- We want to look at chroots, again
- We should mount the chroot on / at boot time, this will get us dbus
and and other stuff.
-- Restarting dbus during a session is no longer a support operation
in Karmic
- broder and geofft will look at this
The Livecd:
- There is a prospective working on booting the live cd over the
network using iscsi.
- There is consensus that this is cool and we should think about using
it as a service.
- The prospective also has some ideas for improving our PXE environment
Chainloading PXE:
- broder has images in his Public
- we should burn CDs for hotline for when PXE is slow
