Does the perl Cyrus IMAP service break when accessed through NAT?

Today I brought home an Athena 9 VM and have been playing with it.
I was a bit confused to get console messages complaining of,
"Premature end-of-file on IMAP connection to PO12.MIT.EDU"
when the from and mailquota commands ran from within my dot files.
Pine and Evolution seem to work fine.
Any thoughts?
