Community Milestones Met:

 * Athena 10/Debathena Early Release deployed on new March 4 target
date.
 * Athena Dotfiles documents have been revised and published.
 * Athena OLH has been migrated to the IS&T Web Site, and many cleanups
were made.

Other Accomplishments:

 * alexp researched Ubuntu support of key third party apps.
 * bugme is now part of default debathena-cluster install.
 * See bi-weekly Release Team Notes for other issues worked on/closed.

Next month's goals:

ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of new and current Athena releases.

OLD: Decide what we want to do about possible Athena VMware image
offering.
OLD: rbasch will implement pre-login kiosk mode support for athena 10.
OLD: jdreed will investigate resolution to ATN-45 (Look into changing
the default zephyr windowgram client to something libnotify-based)
OLD: jdreed and alexp will review debathena-thirdparty and prune
superfluous stuff.

NEW: Release Team will review and act on debathena collaboration
document.
NEW: debathena-thirdparty metapackage will become part of default
cluster install.
NEW: New sessions for failsafe GNOME and xterm will be implemented and
become part of default debathena-cluster install.
NEW: amb will discuss with ops expanding linux-build-10 to serve users
of debuild users.

Next Community Milestone(s):

Deploy one or more debathena quickstation systems.

Patch release as needed.

Issues:

The procedure for adding another suite to Athena 10 is "rarely
performed, and the infrastructure for it is imperfect."

RESOLVED 4/3/09: Linux has standardized on the bash command shell, not
the tcsh command shell heretofore the Athena Standard. After much
discussion and having tested full support of bash, the default shell for
newly created Athena accounts should change from tcsh to bash starting
on or about January 1, 2009. (Rememeber to notify athena-rcc of the
change when it happens.)

Key learnings:

Additional comments:

Athena Monthly machine counts:

Method: On install, machines get a unique ID. Each day every system
reports its existence to a central syslog. This method over-counts
systems installed multiple times. Systems running Athena than 9.0 or
earlier are not counted.

The big upsurge of Linux Athena systems happened this month because now
all debathena systems are logging to our central counter.

SYSTYPE 10/08 11/08 12/08 01/09 02/09 03/09 Delta
LINUX 842 819 809 809 839 1063 +224
SUN 167 155 147 145 142 138 -4

Count of systems registered for RHN (Non Athena update):

Date 10/08 11/08 12/08 01/09 02/09 03/09 Delta
Total 2452 2493 2411 2473 2587 +114
Inactive 1613 1672 1562 1593 1659 +66
Active 839 821 849 880 928 +48

Monthly Athena Login counts:

Method: By reviewing of the logs of the service that makes
personalized notifications to users at login time, we are able to count
the number of unique Athena logins. Here we display the total number of
logins over a four week period, the number of logins by unique user ID
and the median number of logins per unique user ID.

Summary: usage dropped in March due to Spring Break

Date: 10/08 11/08 12/08 01/09 02/09 03/09
Total: 196933 191877 244246 124846 190073 155116
Unique: 10006 9961 10560 8420 9654 9164
Median: 8 8 8 4 8 7

Breakdown for current month:
(Total of unique logins will be less than the sum of the sources,
since each source login only gets counted once.)

Total logins for four week period ending Apr 4 04:59:
  155116 ( quickstation 24136 cluster 41591 other 54162 dialup 35227 )
Unique logins for four week period:
    9164 ( quickstation 5137 cluster 5299 other 4872 dialup 2860 )
Median logins for four week period:
