I seem to have missed a bunch of the thread, but I think
I did manage to compile mit-scheme for amd64 from the
generated C source at some point. I don't think it's possible
for that to become self-hosting, though.
I don't think this is something we want to be in the
business of doing, though.

(Of course, this was on FreeBSD and not linux, so
there may have been some 32-bit compatability
libraries involved; I wasn't paying attention to
that at the time.)
