We understand the root cause of this problem.

Technical explanation:

On Athena Dell 745 systems we install the ATI
proprietary graphics driver. That driver relies upon a particular version of libGL. A properly functioning system has a symbolic link:

/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1 -> libGL.fgl.so.1.2

If that symlink gets re-pointed to a stock
libGL.so.1.2
open office, and other apps, such as the StarBiochem
java applet will crash.

Certain cluster systems had unauthorized software on them that caused the libGL symbolic link to be wrong.
(A system in N42 had been hand-tooled incorrectly and across an update of the X server, also had the libGL symbolic link set wrong.)

Those systems are in process of being corrected by hotline.

This should resolve the problem.

If other systems are discovered that manifest this problem, check the libGL symlink.

You don't have to be a wizard to correct the symlink. Public systems can be corrected by rebooting twice to cause the workstation integrity checker to clean things up. (Twice is required because the proprietary graphics driver script runs before the integrity checker, and so some work is left undone until the second reboot.)
