Team Name: Athena Release Team
Report Date: 9 January 2008

Submitted by: Bill Cattey

Release URL: http://web.mit.edu/release/www/

Accomplishments past period:

ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of current Athena release.

Last Month's goals:

DONE: Transfer the Linux 9.4 build machine to a virtual image.
DONE: Retire the off-cycle Solaris build machine since we're not
planning on doing another Solaris full release.
PROGRESS: Create new Linux installer based on a more current RHEL 4
Kernel that includes necessary drivers for Dell Optiplex 755.
PROGRESS: Crystalize details of Athena10/Debathena collaboration to
determine what the build scripts and source control will look like.
DONE: Deal with build fallout from OpenAFS import (blocks virtualization
of Linux 9.4 build host).

Community Milestones Met:

Patch release containing fix for numpy package on Solaris, Firefox
2.0.0.11, RHEL 4.6 quarterly update, OpenAFS 1.4.5 if deemed
appropriate, and other minor fixes.

Other Accomplishments:

* Integrated VMWare player into Linux Athena release, and deployed in
most recent patch release.
* Developed work-around for issues in newer proprietary ATI drivers
allowing us to support the Optiplex 755 hardware, and deployed in most
recent patch release.
* Integrated Flash 9 plug-in to Solaris because a package finally became
available from Sun. This resolves an issue first logged in our October
2007 status report.
* Set up AFS mirror of Athena 10 repository.
* Imported some Debathena materials into Athena 10 repository.
* Documented existing Debathena scripts and procedures.
* Researched CUPS printing mechanisms and options for Athena 10 (because
we want to avoid integrating LPRng into Ubuntu.)

Next month's goals:

ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of current Athena release.

OLD: Create new Linux installer based on a more current RHEL 4
Kernel that includes necessary drivers for Dell Optiplex 755.
OLD: Crystalize details of Athena10/Debathena collaboration to
determine what the build scripts and source control will look like.

NEW: Finish importing Debathena materials into Athena 10 repository.
NEW: Adapt Debathena materials and procedures for Athena 10 project.
NEW: Set up IPS build server for Athena 10.
NEW: Set up apt repository for testing Athena 10 packages.
NEW: Set up HTTP gateway for apt repository.

Next Community Milestone(s):

Patch release when necessary.

Issues:

Ops has some concerns about a desktop-server platform split (Ubuntu
vs. RHEL 4). We need to keep in communication with them about that.

Kerberos 4 mail clients like mh, xmh, and exmh are going to die when
Kerberos 4 is shut down. Our plan is to investigate amending inc to
support Kerberos 5 as soon as the mail servers get Kerberos 5 support.

JDK 1.6 appears to interact poorly with AFS home directories under
Solaris, taking several minutes to start. UPDATE 1/9/08: Since we are
phasing out Solaris, we are deleting this issue unresolved.

Sidney-Pacific (the graduate dorm) bought four Dimension 9200s to
upgrade their Athena cluster and found that they were unable to
install them. They are waiting on us for a new rev of the installer.

Key learnings:

Additional comments:

Athena Monthly machine counts:

Method: On install, machines get a unique ID. Each day every system
reports its existence to a central syslog. This method over-counts
systems installed multiple times. Systems running Athena than 9.0 or
earlier are not counted.

Summary: Here we see the effect of cluster renewal beginning to
replace Suns with Linux systems.

SYSTYPE 07/07 08/07 09/07 10/07 11/07 12/07 Delta
LINUX 779 815 849 856 820 799 -21
SUN 303 299 278 270 259 255 -4

Count of systems registered for RHN (Non Athena update):

Date 07/07 08/07 09/07 10/07 11/07 12/07 Delta
Total 1765 1845 1970 2034 2102 2173 +71
Inactive 926 993 1073 1122 1183 1284 +101
Active 839 852 897 912 919 889 -30

Monthly Athena Login counts:

Method: By reviewing of the logs of the service that makes
personalized notifications to users at login time, we are able to count
the number of unique Athena logins. Here we display the total number of
logins over a four week period, the number of logins by unique user ID
and the median number of logins per unique user ID.

Date: 07/07 08/07 09/07 10/07 11/07 12/07
Total: 153036 147026 254619 231773 213877 175480
Unique: 7212 9286 10981 10411 10158 9653
Median: 5 4 9 9 6 7

Breakdown for current month:
(Total of unique logins will be less than the sum of the sources,
since each source login only gets counted once.)

Total logins for four week period ending Dec 29 04:58:
  175480 ( other 106703 quickstation 27326 cluster 41451 )
Unique logins for four week period:
    9653 ( other 5718 quickstation 5917 cluster 5259 )
Median logins for four week period:
       7 ( other 4 quickstation 3 cluster 4 )
