Accomplishments past period:

ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of current Athena release.

Last Month's goals:

ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of current Athena release.

DELAYED: Finish Solaris 10 installer integration for summer's Athena
full release. (We're going to remove this task since the customers are
not strongly requesting the value add, and we're ramping down Solaris
desktop support.)
PROGRESS: Create new Linux installer based on a more current RHEL 4
Kernel that includes necessary drivers for Dell Optiplex 745.
DONE: Continue investigating installing VMWare player on Athena
machines. (We know how to do it if we get licensed to do it.)
DONE: Investigate a mechanism to offer special video drivers to
cluster systems by default and to private systems as an opt-in.

Community Milestones Met:

Other Accomplishments:

* At the request of a Debian developer, put a snapshot of the Zephyr
development code out to athena-dist.
* Integrated Sun security patches.
* Integrated firefox 2.0.0.5.
* Updated JDK to 1.5.0 update 12.
* Monitored availability of Flash player 9 for Solaris. (There are
developments but no binary Sun package is yet available from Sun.)
* Put patch release into testing that contains the special video
drivers, a Firefox upgrade, Sun security patches, Kerberos 5 support for
discuss, and a JDK upgrade.

Next month's goals:

ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of current Athena release.

OLD: Create new Linux installer based on a more current RHEL 4 Kernel
that includes necessary drivers for Dell Optiplex 745.
NEW: Develop plans for full release targeted for next summer.

Next Community Milestone(s):

Patch release containing JDK 1.5 update, proprietary video driver
support for Linux, Firefox update and security patches for Solaris.

Issues:

Kerberos 4 mail clients like mh, xmh, and exmh are going to die when
Kerberos 4 is shut down. Our plan is to investigate amending inc to
support Kerberos 5 as soon as the mail servers get Kerberos 5 support.

JDK 1.6 appears to interact poorly with AFS home directories under
Solaris, taking several minutes to start.

Sidney-Pacific (the graduate dorm) bought four Dimension 9200s to
upgrade their Athena cluster and found that they were unable to
install them. They are waiting on us for a new rev of the installer.

Key learnings:

Additional comments:

Athena Monthly machine counts:

Method: On install, machines get a unique ID. Each day every system
reports its existence to a central syslog. This method over-counts
systems installed multiple times. Systems running Athena than 9.0 or
earlier are not counted.

Summary: Here we see the effect of cluster renewal beginning to
replace Suns with Linux systems.

SYSTYPE  02/07   03/07   04/07   05/07   06/07   07/07   Delta
LINUX    822     810     798     774     792     779     -13
SUN      337     320     315     308     314     303     -11

Count of systems registered for RHN (Non Athena update):

Date     02/07    03/07    04/07    05/07    06/07    07/07     Delta
Total     1620     1764     1811     1840     1824     1765      -59
Inactive   860      937      969      987      969      926      -43

Monthly Athena Login counts:

Method: By reviewing of the logs of the service that makes
personalized notifications to users at login time, we are able to count
the number of unique Athena logins. Here we display the total number of
logins over a four week period, the number of logins by unique user ID
and the median number of logins per unique user ID.

Date:     02/07   03/07   04/07   05/07   06/07   07/07
Total:   253845  225843  250846  217514  143980  153036
Unique:   10108    9838    9867    9730    7907    7212
Median:      10       9      10       8       4       5

Breakdown for current month:
(Total of unique logins will be less than the sum of the sources,
since each source login only gets counted once.)

Total logins for four week period: ending August 4, 2007
  153036 ( other 107077 quickstation 16688 cluster 29271 )
Unique logins for four week period:
    7212 ( other 4603 quickstation 3443 cluster 2757 )
Median logins for four week period:
       5 ( other 4 quickstation 2 cluster 3 )
