I visited the machine with Noel today; it was booting happily when we
left.  Turns out that despite the SATA interface, it was using an IDE
disk, and the installer was detecting the SATA hardware and doing exactly
the wrong thing with /etc/fstab and so forth.  (Selecting "no" for the
force_sata option would probably have worked straightaway.)
