Background: when I do encrypted logins to bsdish machines there is a high
likelihood that I will lose the connection. This was originally a problem for
me logging into agent-86 and running kermit, and Greg was not able to
reproduce it.

If I rlogin -x to akom (my vax) and start emacs and then try to suspend it
with control-z I get

read: Not enough space
                               Connection closed.

a similiar thing happens if I log into medic, my Dec but I have to type a few
more keystrokes. This happens regardless of whether I log in as me or root as
long as it is encrypted.

This is not a problem when I log into tow, Jonathon's 8.0 sun, however if
Jonathon logs into akom and runs emacs he has the same problem (so it is not
my username).

I can reproduce this at will and I consider it a 'show stopper' bug
