For now, I'd say only address the immediate problem of
the incompatibility with autofs, and just remove the mount
functionality (assuming that is a small amount of work), i.e.
leaving the "gray area" functionality intact.  This seems
good enough for the prototype release we have talked
about.  We can address the gray area as we (hopefully)
get a better sense of direction.

Recall that we have an alternative to using autofs, namely
to provide our own PAM module which attaches the home
directory at login.  Given the current guiding principle of
reducing maintenance cost, we should avoid doing
anything to attach and related software that would
require more effort than developing the PAM module.
