Perhaps interestingly, 1.3.86 does not fix the problem, but 1.3.86 plus
Garry's small patches which we thought wouldn't make a difference *does*
fix the problem.  (The only other apparent difference is that my test
machine with straight 1.3.86 didn't get a new afsd, just the kernel
module, but I don't think that matters here.)

I've still got the modules from that build if some aspect of this is
interesting to anyone, though the machine in question is now running
9.4.12.
