Accomplishments past period:
ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of Athena 9.3.
Last Month's goals:
ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of current Athena release.
ON-HOLD: Develop Disconnected Athena documentation.
ON-HOLD: Implement strategy for migrating Athena bug reports from
discuss to GForge.
ON-HOLD: For Athena disconnected operation, craft fixes for issues
raised in testing and retest.
CHANGED: Integrate new version of OpenSSH summer's Athena full release.
(Currently planning to punt until a newer version of OpenSSH offers
more benefit for the cost of doing the integration.)
DELAYED: Investigate RPM issue that is resulting in deleted system
files as
a result of interrupted updates. (Our priority has been with more
urgent and bigger issues in the new release.)
PROGRESS: Finish Solaris 10 integration for summer's Athena full
release. (Updating to Solaris 10 has been done for some time. Now
working on install, possibly using new Solaris WANBoot since we're
still waiting on required source components from Sun to update our
CNBoot system.)
DELAYED: Discuss project plans for long term Athena work.
DONE: Athena 9.4 Beta Release, re-targeted for May 15.
DELAYED: Implement Java3d request.
DELAYED: Integrate gaim into release if decision is made to move
forward.
Community Milestones Met:
None scheduled.
Other Accomplishments:
* System release notes are done.
* Imported Mozilla 1.7.8 and Firefox 1.0.4 security fixes.
* Updated helper app support for MIME components in GNOME.
* Implemented scripts to migrate Linux machines from lilo to grub boot
system in response to observing that lilo does not function properly in
RHEL 4.
* Investigated AFS cache coherency issue where the user sees an old
version of a file instead of the current version.
* Resolved AFS issue that was causing Linux logins to hang.
* Got Emacs to build under Solaris 10 and stopped reusing 9.3 binaries
under 9.4.
Next month's goals:

CHANGED: Finish Solaris 10 installer integration for summer's Athena
full release.
NEW: Athena Early Release targeted for June 13.
NEW: Continue investigating AFS cache coherency issue.
NEW: Patch release prior to going to Early to fix last set of important
bugs.
NEW: User Release Notes.
Next Community Milestone(s):
Early Release targeted for June 13.
Bugfix patch release when next needed.
Issues:
OpenAFS and the Linux community are not doing as good a job of working
together as we would like. Getting a working AFS as we adopt RHEL 4
with the 2.6 kernel will be a bit of extra work. (May still be an issue
as of 6/8/05.)
A timeout problem with AFS in disconnected operation (If you start AFS
when you're off-net you hang for a long time.) was thought to be fixed
but is not. We consider this a show-stopper for graceful disconnected
operation, and have put other disconnected operation work on hold until
this issue is resolved. (We think we can resolve this issue by setting
AFS to
start on first network up event (like we do for zhm) instead of at boot
time.)
Lack of certain long-ago requested Solaris Source modules is preventing
forward progress on a direct install of Solaris 10, on updating dialup
servers to Solaris 10, and porting knfs to Solaris 10.
We would like to discontinue support of knfs, but we are unsure if our
remaining customer base for knfs is willing or able to switch to
something else like AFS or SMB.
Red Hat seems to have decided to delete GSSAPI Kerberos support from
OpenSSH. Development of Kerberos support by OpenSSH.org seems to be
going in a different direction than we'd ideally prefer. This may spell
more integration effort by MIT for Kerberos in OpenSSH in the future.
The developers have lots of vacation time to "use or lose". We are
working this issue and hope to meet our deadlines without sacrificing
much in the way of accrued vacation.

Additional comments:
Athena Monthly machine counts:
Method: On install, machines get a unique ID. Each day every system
reports its existence to a central syslog. This method over-counts
systems installed multiple times. Systems running Athena than 9.0 or
earlier are not counted.
SYSTYPE 12/2004 01/2005 02/2005 03/2005 04/2005 05/2005 Delta

SUN 632 645 621 627 627 617 -10
Monthly Athena Login counts:
Method: By reviewing of the logs of the service that makes
personalized notifications to users at login time, we are able to count
the number of unique Athena logins. Here we display the total number of
logins over a four week period, the number of logins by unique user ID
and the median number of logins per unique user ID.
