Last Month's goals: ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of current Athena release. ON-HOLD: Develop Disconnected Athena documentation. ON-HOLD: Implement strategy for migrating Athena bug reports from discuss to GForge. ON-HOLD: For Athena disconnected operation, craft fixes for issues raised in testing and retest. DONE: Deploy new Athena installer with better SCSI support. DELAYED: Integrate new version of OpenSSH into summer's Athena full release. (This is actually not a very important task because our present OpenSSH works fine, and taking a new version is a bit of work.) DELAYED: Investigate RPM issue that is resulting in deleted system files as a result of interrupted updates. (We have been pushing Red Hat on more important issues, such as Hardware collaboration, and the Satellite server.) PROGRESS: Finish Solaris 10 integration for summer's Athena full release. DELAYED: Discuss project plans for long term Athena work. (Focus has been on urgent issues related to on-time deployment of the new Release.) DONE: Deploy Athena 9.4 Alpha release. DONE: Finish integrating Firefox into Athena 9.4. DONE: Any release-related Jabber work required for jabbber options presentation in May. (We examined various client options, and recommend gaim. TODO: Decide whether or not it will go into the release.) DELAYED: Athena 9.4 Beta Release, targeted for May 1. (This time around we have had more serious issues in Alpha than in previous years. We are hot on the trail of remedies for RHEL 4 update related show stoppers.) DONE: Definitively resolve to either implement or reject Java3d request. Community Milestones Met: None scheduled. Other Accomplishments: * Integrated new version of Kerberos 5 to resolve issue of kadmin backward compatibility. * Integrated security updates for Mozilla and Firefox. * Developed and integrated changes to disallow root logins (but not su) to cluster and quickstations for summer release. Next month's goals: ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of current Athena release. ON-HOLD: Develop Disconnected Athena documentation. ON-HOLD: Implement strategy for migrating Athena bug reports from discuss to GForge. ON-HOLD: For Athena disconnected operation, craft fixes for issues raised in testing and retest. OLD: Integrate new version of OpenSSH summer's Athena full release. OLD: Investigate RPM issue that is resulting in deleted system files as a result of interrupted updates. OLD: Finish Solaris 10 integration for summer's Athena full release. OLD: Discuss project plans for long term Athena work. OLD: Athena 9.4 Beta Release, re-targeted for May 15. NEW: Implement Java3d request. NEW: Integrate gaim into release if decision is made to move forward. Next Community Milestone(s): Early Release targeted for June 15. Bugfix patch release when next needed. Issues: OpenAFS and the Linux community are not doing as good a job of working together as we would like. Getting a working AFS as we adopt RHEL 4 with the 2.6 kernel will be a bit of extra work. (May still be an issue as of 5/5/05.) A timeout problem with AFS in disconnected operation (If you start AFS when you're off-net you hang for a long time.) was thought to be fixed but is not. We consider this a show-stopper for graceful disconnected operation, and have put other disconnected operation work on hold until this issue is resolved. (Still an issue as of 5/4/05.) Key learnings: Additional comments: Athena Monthly machine counts: Method: On install, machines get a unique ID. Each day every system reports its existence to a central syslog. This method over-counts systems installed multiple times. Systems running Athena than 9.0 or earlier are not counted. Here we display the total number of logins over a four week period, the number of logins by unique user ID and the median number of logins per unique user ID.
