There were a couple questions that came in on status items, and some
errors in the Machine count and Login count sections. This replaces the
previous status report published on 9 March 2005.

Team Name: Athena UNIX Platform Team
Report Date: 6 April 2005

Accomplishments past period:

ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of Athena 9.3.

Last Month's goals:

ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of current Athena release.

ON-HOLD: Develop Disconnected Athena documentation.
ON-HOLD: Implement strategy for migrating Athena bug reports from
discuss to GForge.
ON-HOLD: For Athena disconnected operation, craft fixes for issues
raised in testing and retest.
PROGRESS: Deploy new Athena installer with better SCSI support.
(Existing customers for this have used Andrew's Beta version.)
DONE: Integrate OpenAFS 1.3.7? for Linux 2.6 and Solaris 10 support.
(Integrated 1.3.79.)
DONE: Integrate upcoming Kerberos 1.4 release into summer's Athena full
release.
DELAYED: Integrate new version of OpenSSH for summer's Athena full
release.
PROGRESS: Investigate RPM issue that is resulting in deleted system
files as
a result of interrupted updates. (Escalated inside of Red Hat.)
PROGRESS: Begin integrating Solaris 10 for summer's Athena full
release. (Lots accomplished. Dealt with many new Solaris 10-isms. We
have enough done to do update to Athena 9.4 Alpha. ISSUE: We will need
source of Solaris 10 components soon.)
DELAYED: Discuss project plans for long term Athena work.
PROGRESS: Deploy Athena 9.4 Alpha release. (Linux done. Solaris
expected on April 12.)

Community Milestones Met:

None scheduled.

Other Accomplishments:

* Made progress on Firefox integration into release. (Their source
tree organization presented challenges. We hope they improve things in
the future.)
* Updated from GNOME 2.8.0 to GNOME 2.8.3 and remedied a lot of little
issues.

Next month's goals:

ONGOING: Testing and bug fixing of current Athena release.

ON-HOLD: Develop Disconnected Athena documentation.
ON-HOLD: Implement strategy for migrating Athena bug reports from
discuss to GForge.
ON-HOLD: For Athena disconnected operation, craft fixes for issues
raised in testing and retest.
OLD: Deploy new Athena installer with better SCSI support.
OLD: Integrate new version of OpenSSH summer's Athena full release.
OLD: Investigate RPM issue that is resulting in deleted system files as
a result of interrupted updates.
CHANGED: Finish Solaris 10 integration for summer's Athena full release.
OLD: Discuss project plans for long term Athena work.
OLD: Deploy Athena 9.4 Alpha release.

NEW: Finish integrating Firefox into Athena 9.4.
NEW: Any release-related Jabber work required for jabbber options
presentation in May.
NEW: Athena 9.4 Beta Release, targeted for May 1.
NEW: Definitively resolve to either implement or reject Java3d request.

Next Community Milestone(s):

Bugfix patch release when next needed.

Issues:

OpenAFS and the Linux community are not doing as good a job of working
together as we would like. Getting a working AFS as we adopt RHEL 4
with the 2.6 kernel will be a bit of extra work. (Still an issue as of
4/6/05.)

We have received a request through Alex Prengel to integrate Java3d
into the Athena release. This work is non-trivial. We are awaiting a
management decision as to whether or not to proceed with it.
(We provided additional detail in March and made progress resolving
this.)

A timeout problem with AFS in disconnected operation (If you start AFS
when you're off-net you hang for a long time.) was thought to be fixed
but is not. We consider this a show-stopper for graceful disconnected
operation, and have put other disconnected operation work on hold until
this issue is resolved. (Still an issue as of 4/6/05.)

Key learnings:

Additional comments:

Athena Monthly machine counts:

Method: On install, machines get a unique ID. Each day every system
reports its existence to a central syslog. This method over-counts
systems installed multiple times. Systems running Athena than 9.0 or
earlier are not counted.

SYSTYPE 10/2004 11/2004 12/2004 01/2005 02/2005 03/2005 Delta
LINUX 736 753 737 746 770 762 -8
SUN 659 647 632 645 621 627 +6

Monthly Athena Login counts:

Method: By reviewing of the logs of the service that makes
personalized notifications to users at login time, we are able to count
the number of unique Athena logins. Here we display the total number of
logins over a four week period, the number of logins by unique user ID
and the median number of logins per unique user ID.

Date: 02/05 03/05
Total: 353970 308526
Unique: 10847 10493
Median: 12 10
