The latest issue of the CAEN (U of Mich) newsletter has an article
that does a decent job of all of this as far as the CAEN community
is concerned. It would probably be a good start for an Athena
article. I tried getting to the electronic version of the article
at URL:

but was not successful. I have the paper copy and can give to it
the appropriate person if you let me know who it is.
