Hi. In this summer's Athena release (scheduled for early next week),
we are planning to upgrade the version of Mozilla in the release from
1.6 to 1.7. This upgrade will bring us to the current official
"stable" Mozilla release branch, and will also position us to take
advantage of Kerberos web authentication should MIT ever make use of
that technology.

Traditionally, the impact of Mozilla 1.x releases on MIT web sites has
not been significant, so we don't anticipate any problems. (And if
there are problems, Athena gets the majority of its use during
academic terms, so there would be plenty of time to address them.)
But if members of the browser release team have concerns, we would be
happy to help with testing or to help resolve issues. If anyone would
like to test out the new browser version themselves prior to the
general release, there are some "early release" Athena machines you
could use to do so:

  Linux:
    n42-202-1
    n42-286-1
    w20-575-31
    w20-575-32
    w20-575-33
    w20-575-34
    w20-575-35

  Solaris:
    w20-575-80
    w20-575-81

(There are other early test machines, but those are the ones in areas
most likely to be accessible to the average IT staff person.)

Please let me or release-team@mit.edu know if you have any questions,
concerns, or comments.
