The first round of testing (hereafter refered to as "friendly test") for
the IAP release of Athena 7.7 will begin tonight (January 17th). This
patch release 7.7 is supported on the Sun, DECstation, SGI, and RISC/6000
platforms.
If your Sun, SGI, IBM RISC/6000, or DECstation is configured to update
automatically and you log out before you leave, the machine will update
to the new 7.7 overnight tonight. You may wish to check the following
machine(s) to see if the update occured properly:

I. How to Tell if Your Workstation has Updated
Some time after you log out your workstation will probably
automatically update to the new release. However, some will need to
be updated manually.
To check whether you workstation has updated, type:
tail -1 /etc/athena/version
If you have taken the update it will indicate the following versions:
Sun Version 7.7V
DEC Version 7.7P
IBM Version 7.7O
SGI Version 0.8E
II. Reporting Bugs
Report problems in the new release using sendbug.
III. Questions
If you have questions about taking the new release, send them
to me (dot@mit).
IV. Release Changes
Release 7.7 is a patch release and has very few user-visible changes.
The following features are included in this release:
All Platforms
krb.conf update
Kerberos 5 error message fix, updating the binaries kinit,
login.krb, login, and xlogin. This is to address the warning
message that started appearing January 1.
AIX
3.2.5 Install patch. This change will not be visible to users.
Solaris
Remove the directory /var/opt and make it a link to
/srvd/var/opt.
Stop running the sendmail daemon on workstations in the
Athena cell.
Clean up sendmail temporary files in /etc/init.d/athena.
Clean up assorted file ownerships.
Add kernel drivers for MAE, modify /etc/devlink.tab.
xlogin will chown /dev/le to root.sys 0600 when it starts,
to username.sys when a user logs in, iff the file /etc/netspy
exists. /etc/netspy will be automatically created for workstations
where PUBLIC=true.

Notes:
V. If your workstation has not updated
If your machine has taken the update, you may safely ignore the rest
of this message. If it did not, you probably have AUTOUPDATE set to
false on your workstation.
To find out if AUTOUPDATE is false, type:
grep AUTOUPDATE /etc/athena/rc.conf
If it is set to false, you'll need to update manually. See the
section "Updating a workstation manually".
VI. Updating a workstation manually
1) Login as root on the console.
On a Sun or DECstation:
Shutdown X, by hitting CTRL-P on the machine. Then login as
"root" (the default password is "mrroot").
On a RISC/6000:
Hit ALT-ACT to switch to the "console" hft. Then login as
root (the default password is "mrroot").
2) Shutdown timesharing
DECstation users
-----------------------------
Type:
/bin/athena/detach -h -n -a
/bin/athena/attach -h -n beta-dmusys
/etc/shutdown now
It will take about 30 seconds for the machine to shutdown. After
30 seconds, you will see a warning message of the form:
WARNING: Something is hung (wont die); ps axl advised
Ignore it.
You should now see a # prompt. Press <RETURN> and make sure a
new # prompt appears on the next line. If it appears on the
same line, typing
/usr/ucb/reset (which will not appear in this situation)
will correct the problem. This problem has been most evident
if you force a shutdown while X is running (ie. not following
the directions in step 1).
Sun users
-----------------------------
Type:
/bin/athena/detach -h -n -a
/bin/athena/attach -h -n beta-sun4sys
RISC/6000 users
---------------
Type:
/bin/athena/detach -h -n -a
/bin/athena/attach -h -n -a beta-rssys
SGI users
---------------
Type:
/bin/athena/detach -h -n -a
/bin/athena/attach -h -n -a beta-sgi
3) Type:
/srvd/update_ws reactivate
This may ask you to press <RETURN> or prompt you for other information.
The prompts should be intelligible (you've no doubt gone through all
these questions during previous updates; there's nothing radically new
in this update).
4) After the update says it has updated the version number and another
# prompt has appeared, type:
/etc/reboot
Sun users
---------
During the reboot process you may see several error messages,
all of which can be ignored. They include the following:
dm: X failed to be come ready
Unable to start X, doing console login instead
Also, the /usr file system does not fsck cleanly.
