I forgot to add one very important keynote.

We cannot use IBM's update strategies, because it tries to create enough
temporary files so that the update can be backed out.  Since the update
requires thousands of patches, many of them are co-requisites, the
approximate disk space required for staging is a few hundred megabytes.
In addition to the space limitation, if it ran straight through
automatically, it would literally take days to complete.  This type of
update would not work in the field.  It is because of this basic update
problem, that we are forced to look for another update strategy for the
IBM RISC/6000.
