This just in from Terman in EECS, in response to the questions I asked.
It seems as if the scope of the problem is not as broad as I feared.
But it's possible that we should check in with Troxel.

At the moment none of the systems I'm in the loop for will be
affected.  After some back-and-forth we ended up making dual-boot
machines instead of VMWARE-based machines since neither set of
users was willing to take the performance hit on the CAD tools we
run.

You might ask Don Troxel (troxel@mit.edu) since I know he has
(had?) some VMWARE on Linux setups up in the 6.111 lab.

Your provision to lock in a kernel seemed liked a good stopgap.
To be honest VMWARE hasn't really caught on the department except
as a convenience tool for occasionally running Microsoft software
(eg, to perform a file format conversion).
