Does the linux install leave a /var/athena/install.log around? If so,
that would be interesting to get from the user.

I'd recommend appending the following line to /etc/athena/version,
rather than replacing the existing file:
Hand Inserted (linux) Version 9.0.24 Wed Dec 18 19:58:17 EST 2002
However, before running the update the user should check to see if
/var/athena/release-rpms exists. If it does not, she should copy the
9.0.24 control file into place there *before* starting the update.
