Well, that upgrade path should work fine.

If *perl* (as well as athena-perl) is trying to put stuff in /usr/athena,
something very odd is going on.  If the comments below don't get you
going, could you put the contents of /var/athena/update.log and the
output of "rpm -qa" somewhere publicly readable in AFS?

This sort of thing is usually caused by packages not installed by default
conflicting with packages that are in the new release, and the solution
is to erase or upgrade them.
