I burned an Athena install CD and tried it in the new IBM
Laptop.
I chose option 2 to install on an empty partition.
I think it decided that since there was a free partition, even though it
was of size 0, that it was ok to proceed.
It blew out with tons and tons of repetitions of the same error message:
error: cannot open Oachages database in /sysimage/var/lib/rpm
And then cannot create /sysimage/etc/sysconfig/keyboard
Most telling:
/sysimage/sbin/lilo.conf not found
But it managed to blow away the MBR with Lilo so XP will not start.
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down....
STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF895D640, 0x00000034, 0x00000000)
Oh yes, and by the way, at the moment, in the linux shell from the
failed install, fdisk complains that its unable to read /dev/hda.
I think the partition table has been set to some confusing value by
bad arguments to sdisk. I think I saw a complaint from sdisk about
invalid arguments whiz by.
Suggestion:
If a custom install fails, we should NOT try and put a lilo into the
MBR!
