We now have more insight into what caused many Athena SGIs and
8.4 Suns to crash last night. The problem was caused by a remote scan
triggering a bug in the AFS client on the affected machines; 9.0 Suns
and Linux machines were unaffected because their clients had already
been patched. We had previously believed the Irix client to have been
patched as well, but obviously another vulnerability exists; this is
currently under investigation.

The scan triggering this was caused by a member of the AFS
development community for information gathering purposes, and is
unlikely to recur immediately (we hope). I've taken down the OLC motd
we set last night, since things appear to be under control now.
