Hi. I'm not still not sure if this is the right place for this,
and suggest still reelly feels wrong to me.

I encountered this issue again today, where a user called the SIPB
office with a linux machine that would not attach lockers. As best I
could tell, it came down to a DNS or service switch problem problem on
his machine, but I was unable to usefully debug it through him, and
could think of nothing to do short of visitting his machine or
requesting an account on it, neither of which seemed reasonable. So I
ended up directing him to send mail to linux-help.

It would have made debugging the problem drastically easier
if it were possible to remote-query his named, as it used to be.

The current state seems really unfortunate to me.

I don't know if I'm beating a dead horse or not. I mentioned
this when it was initially decided in release-77[2573] (Feb 2001),
and mentioned an incidence of not being able to debug something in
release-77[3019] (Oct 2001). At that time, it was just an inconvenience.
Today, it resulted in me giving up.
