Problems With Manual Athena 9.0 Update

The help desk suggested I contact you. I'm having trouble
updating my Athena workstation to release 9.0 so I hope someone
can help me - here are the details.
The machine is snowdrop, a Sun Ultra 60. I've "privatized"
the machine and I don't take automatic updates. To remove a
vulnerability in sshd I attempted yesterday to upgrade from
Athena 8.4 to 9.0.
Here's what I did:
- Shut down X and console-logged-on as root.
- detach -a
- hesinfo snowdrop cluster to see what packs to use
- attach -O athena-sun4sys-90
- /srvd/update_ws
- hit return when asked
The machine gives a message about preparing to boot from the swap
device and then starts to reboot. The reboot gets as far as a
Sun copyright message, then an error message and some kind of dump
appear and the machine starts to reboot again. And so on ad infinitum.
The error message/dump disappear too quickly for me to read them.
I was able to boot the machine by interrupting with Stop-A and at
the OK? prompt typing "boot disk". This boots back to Athena 8.4
although the system behaves a little strangely (emacs crashes for
example).
I've attached the /etc/athena/version file as it stands at this point
and also the update log.
Please let me know if there's any more info I can supply.
