Fortunately, another path has opened up. Garry noticed that the
latest kernel for Red Hat 7.1 (kernel-2.4.9-6) contains ext3 support,
in the form of a module. We are planning to go to this kernel in the
next Athena patch release anyway due to a local kernel exploit (Garry
has already built AFS modules). Here is my plan:

Wed Oct 24 - 9.0.19 to dev cell, with kernel-2.4.9-6 and SUNWski
Mon Nov 5 - 9.0.19 to athena cell
Wed Nov 7 - 9.0.20 to dev cell for Linux, with ext3fs turned on
Mon Jan 14 - 9.0.20 to athena cell

This gives us a nice long testing period for ext3fs, including a
couple of weeks of testing in the field during IAP.
