I believe it is a bug in dm that you don't get a console login on
Linux if X isn't working. Perhaps Mike could look into this.

This is a security issue, not a conformity issue. If you screensave a
cluster machine, people shouldn't be able to switch to a virtual
console and log in as root.

I don't believe system updates ever run Xconfigurator; I doubt your
XF86Config file even changed. I suspect your X server binary changed
(9.0.15 updated the X server RPMs for security reasons) and some
behavior change unrelated to the security issues caused your
configuration to stop working.
