I'd like to suggest that the default major mode for Emacs be "text
mode".

The current default major mode is "Lisp", and if you just start up
emacs, then type in that emacs window, and then hit Control-x Control-c,
it will exit automatically (without prompting you to save).

However, if you switch the major mode to "Text", then type in some text,
and then hit Control-x Control-c, emacs will ask you if you want to save
the buffer.

This is a fairly simple modification to the system elisp files, and
would probably save some hair-pulling and stress for users.
