I think generally it won't matter.  If it does matter, 64-bit will
cover more machines, but you might need to build it both ways and use
a hack to pick the right one.  Don't do that until you find a real
incompatibility, though; only programs which poke into kernel memory
should care.

In general, nothing you compile under 9.0 should be expected to run
under 8.4.  It is never a good idea to rely on compatibility in that
direction.
