I investigated the control modifier problem further, and it seems to be
due to a problem with the X input method facility -- XmbLookupString()
is wrongly returning the unmodified character. Calling XLookupString()
instead does correctly return the modified (i.e. control) character.
The problem went away when I configured gtk not to use the X input method,
and rebuilt the libraries (probably not an acceptable workaround for the
release). This is likely an IRIX Xlib bug.
