I'm sorry to say...it bugs me and makes me scowl. The color
is...blech, and it looks like the screen needs an ironing.
I was actually going to comment that the default Nautilus theme looks
pretty bad - at least on my 8-bit display. The Crux-Teal theme, on
the other hand, looks really nice and has a much more pleasing icon
set.
And actually, I think the default background for that theme is a lot
less barfy:

...though it still leaves something to be desired. Perhaps a nice
indigo?

I don't think color-consistency with mainline Gnome is terribly
important, especially since we are changing the icon set anyway. It's
also not a bad idea to have some visual cue that you're using
Athena-Gnome and *not* vanilla Gnome, since Athena magic makes will
not work in other environments.
