Actually there were 5 machines.

I got mail back from Tom Cavin (the owner of the 2 ultra1s) saying
that the problem was a bad .private script.  (He was able to get rid
of it since he already had a better solution for the problem the
.private script was trying to solve.  For those who don't know,
.private exiting with a non-zero exit status is a valid reason for
mkserv to exit but leave teh machine thinking it's in the middle of an
update.

The sparc5 (no-cookie) that I have access to, also seems to have
fallen victim to a bad .private script.  The gross details of how
.private broke will go to the relevant people.

The remaining 2 machiens are eecs-ath-16, and athpal05.  I'll send
mail to Myron, but at this point I'm betting on more bad .private
scripts.
