When I first got this Ultra 5, I noticed that after using it for a while,
it had lapsed down to displaying only 256 colors. There are certain
obvious cues for this, most notably that my default home page (which isn't
MIT's) looks amazingly horrid.

I asked Bill about it, he came in, fiddled with my monitor cable (which
I'd thought was well attached) and downed and rebooted the machine.

Later attempts - the color depth has lapsed back several times since then
- confirm that the cable's fine, it's the rebooting that fixes it.

I've long suspected there was a pattern, and today I confirmed it, upon
logging in this morning and finding that it was back to 256 colors AGAIN:
Every time the machine takes an Athena update, it resets itself to 256
colors. A plain old reboot (actually, I always boot -r, which may or may
not be important) brings it back to whatever its usual color depth
(16-bit, 32-bit, I can't really tell) normally is.

I'd send this to bugs but it'd just end up here anyway.
