The Athena 8.4.10 patch release is currently scheduled for the evening
of Monday August 7. Changes in this patch release include (these are
mostly small bug fixes):
* There are a couple of fixes to the local netscape mirroring
scripts, including a fix which should make netscape-movemail
work again.
* The reversion of the disabling of the IRIX kernel bug
workaround should happen properly this time.
* Solaris should have pdflatex installed now.
* On Linux, there are updates to the Red Hat gpm, pam, and
emacs RPMs for security reasons.
* attach does a better job of cleaning up after itself if a
mount command fails.
* ktutil won't create world-readable keytab files.
* xlogin will automatically center itself independent of
resolution.
* The xlogin resources for Linux are cleaned up, and include a
"restart in 8-bit mode" option. Unfortunately, the option
doesn't work quite yet due to some X server configuration
issues.
* There are new athinfo queries for cluster information
(clusterinfo, clusterinfo.bsh) and free disk space (df).
* dm won't spuriously complain about interrupted reads from
the console.
* On Linux, verification should run.
* On Linux, cron jobs should run.
* On Linux, there should be support for ADDR=dhcp in syncconf.
* On Linux, syncconf should set the system hostname if it
changed in rc.conf.
* On Linux, syncconf doesn't confuse AFSSRV for AFSSERVER.
* On Linux, the floppy device should be world-writeable.
* On Linux, the update script should run mkserv properly, and
shouldn't hang the console during an auto-update when the
update fails. Unfortunately, these fixes won't apply until
the next update; the update to 8.4.10 will still have the
same problems.
* On Linux, the athena-ifhp RPM shouldn't be installing a file
already present in the athena-lprng RPM.
* Linux quickstations should put up the little clock like
they're supposed to.
* On Solaris, setup-swap-boot should support Ultra systems
with SCSI disks.
* On Solaris, the OpenGL symlinks should actually point
somewhere.
For machines set AUTOUPDATE=false, you can take the update, after it
goes out, by doing a console login as root (type Control-P at the
xlogin prompt) and running "update_ws".
Please report any bugs found using the "sendbug" command. Please send
any questions or comments to release-team@mit.edu.
